Mary, Jim, and Zach highlight local sustainable sources of food in Central Ohio by interviewing Columbus based community organizers, restaurant owners, bloggers, and farmers to transmit their ideas and philosophies as far as we can. Our show has been running regularly since January 2008.

Slow Food Columbus
Columbus Foodcast and the great minds behind Tacotrucks Columbus have a chat at Los Potosinos. Lydia, co-owner of Los Potosinos, was present during the introduction but her full interview was cut due to time constraints. Lydia will get her due though as she'll have an entire episode to herself in the coming weeks.

Hungrywoolf, CMHGourmand, and Taco Drew started Taco Trucks Columbus in January 09 "to try and locate, sample, and document the taco truck culture of Columbus Ohio." The local Latino population has grown to 6% up from 2.5% in 2000 and the number of Taco Trucks has seen an even more pronounced explosion. Luckily Tacotruckcolumbus.com is here as a guide with written reviews, a glossary, T-shirts, and an extensive map.

We salute you, Taco Truckers.

We share our Apron Gala debriefing as well as outline our general North Market Event Survival guide. Here is a hint: wear cargo pants.

A big welcome to Ann of Green Leanings as this was her first Foodcast appearance. We hope to have her back soon.

Eileen Howard and The Great Mad Hoax provided music at The Apron Gala and we sample their music in the podcast.

And thanks to Mary and David at the North Market.

The image to the right was stolen from Andrew's blog without his permission.

Andrew Hall hosts a blind wine tasting for Michael Coyote Taco-Drew, Bethia, Bear, RockmasterMike, Jim and myself (Zach).

Andrew was kind enough to post a writeup of the event that anybody listening in front of a screen should take a glance at during the show.

Since I've already had two bourbons tonight and Andrew described the setup for the event over at his site, I'm going to steal that bit and put it here:

While I was on vacation, I got a text from Zach at Columbus Foodcast. He wanted to do a short phone bit w/ bit talking about some wines from Ohio that I like. Sure. Then I realized that me talking was not only dull but by the time that he edited out my inevitable cursing, all that would be left was, 'Yo. Kinkead Ridge Revelation and Ferrante Golden Bunches. Drink.' So I figured I would have Zach try these wines with me and that morphed into gathering a larger group tasting blind several wines from Ohio versus the rest of the World.

I pulled a bunch of Ohio wines from my cellar and went shopping for 'comparable' wines to face-off. What 'comparable' means provided an interesting discussion during the event. If we take the best of Ohio and match it with the best of the World ... Ohio gets creamed. No ands ifs or buts. Ferrante and N. Ohio is no Donnhoff and Nahe, just for example. What I mean by comparable are wines similar both in price range and aspiration. I matched the Ohio wines with other wines of a price point and that a consumer would likely be selecting by style and appeal. I wasn't very systematic about as I also looked at this as an experimental version of a more ambitious project.

I created seven flights where an Ohio wine was matched with one or two other wines and tasted blind with my seven panelists. The whites were slightly chilled, popped and poured. I opened the reds for just a few minutes before pouring - the idea being to replicate restaurant or home consumption. Cheeses and cracker were available and I encouraged the panelists to discuss each flight before each simply ranked the wines. Having participated in and ran wine judgings, I wanted to create more natural, more convivial arrangement.

Section 2 (8:32) - Dave Rarick tells us a little bit about homemade wines. For anybody in Columbus who is interested in making their own wine, Camelot Cellars offers on site fermentation.

Andrew Martin of Slimpickin's Pork gives us the skinny about head to tail cooking. Andrew's blog posts during the winter delve deeply into this no waste approach to cooking.

Local Harvest is a great way to start if you're interested in buying an animal to have butchered for you. If you are seriously considering such an endevour, Andrew sites Charcuterie as his primary resource.
